Margaret River

Climbing in Giants Cave Margaret River. Self guided cave.
Fremantle south to Rockingham which had a view from a headland to a long bridge to a naval base. Mandurah looked Ok and big and has a new railway to Perth. Bush for a while and then to Bunbury. Big, clean place with a helpful info centre but freezing. Carried on and the sun came out and a sign beckoned us to the pepperwood winery. Shiraz tasting and we bought a bottle.Temptation. Drive on  to Busselton which was also freezing but with heavy rain storms. Along the way we stopped in the Ludlow Tuart forest. Great big trees and lots of white flowers below.

Caravan park had an indoor camp kitchen which is all we needed on a cold night. Bonus was Keith and Lorraine appeared. We had met them in Broome and Exmouth and had a good chat. Their mate Peter was also there and we chatted to him in the morning. Few mossies around and a sign in the tuart forest said some have Ross River fever.
Walked along the Busselton jetty. 1.8kms to the end so a long walk there and back. Freezing. Few interesting birds at the end and an underwater observatory  that we passed on.

Flat swampy land until Dunsborough and then up for 10kms to Cape Naturaliste ,not naturist, headland and lighthouse. Sunshine at last. Lots of flowers and bushes and way out to see we saw more whales. Walked a few kms on the cliff tops in sun and flowers lovely.

Cape Naturaliste. Whales behind

Driving on towards Margaret river along Caves Road. Rolling hills, trees, bright green fields and lots of wineries. Made two detours to the coast at Yallingup and Gractown great ocean views.

It must be windy in Yallingup sometimes
Top tourist caravan park at Margaret river was good with modern rooms for the camp kitchen and TV. Essential on a freezing night. Shared the kitchen with a Melbourne couple with 2 kids driving around Oz and a couple from South Africa but originally Germany and Tanzania. Freezing in the tent that night.
Monday was sunny and a bit warm. Drove 10kms to the nearest beach Peverly. Magnificent with lots of surfers.

Youngmi collects seafood on the Redbank beach

Next beach Redbank just as impressive but different. Pretty corner had lots of giant karri trees.

Back to Margret River for afternoon tea then to the library. Free wifi for over 55s. Dave has made it..

Risotto with irish sausages and red wine for dinner and we have the kitchen to ourselves. Peace. Wear lots of clothes to bed and it is nice and warm.
Tuesday and it is warm and sunny. About 45kms to Augusta then to Cape Leewin light house. Walk along the coast there on granite rocks was good. Lots of crabs in the cracks in the rocks.

Next stop Hamelin Bay. Gorgeous. Turquoise sea, cliffs, white sand beach and two stingrays swimming close to shore. Remains of a pier from the 1800s in the sea.

Drive through the forest to Giants Cave. A highlight. Self guided cave takes about one hour. Big chambers lots of up and down. Climbing laddres and squeezing through holes. Great formations. Wonderful and we were the only people in there.

A tight fit even for Youngmi

Dinner at Peverly beach where we eventually found a picnic table and could cook our burgers. Nice sunset and evening not so cold as last few.
